Finding the right agency partners is critical to running successful marketing communications programs and maximising your return on marketing dollars. And yet it is often a hit and miss affair based around previous contacts, a casual acquaintance or a referral from the media.

Some clients will send RFIs (request for information) to literally dozens of agencies before short-listing for an RFP (request for proposal). Then they shortlist to arrange credentials meetings, to shortlist yet again for final pitch presentations. In certain instances they still require a final stage to decide between two competitors. This pitch process can take several weeks, even months to reach a conclusion. Clearly the process is exhausting for client and agencies alike and hardly inspiring.

Other clients will put together a shortlist of two or three from the get go and move straight forward to a competitive shoot-out. But neither of these approaches are ideal, and neither are particularly likely to deliver the right agency to a client or inspire the agencies to do their best work.
